Nasrudin heard that the Caliph had sent out a secret committee to identify suitable candidates for the position of qazis (judges).
So Mullah Nasrudin began walking around with an old fishing net upon his shoulder. When the committee reached his village, the net drew their attention and they asked him about it.
“Oh, I carry this net to remind me of my humble past as a poor fisherman,” explained Nasrudin wisely. The committee was impressed with his humility and wisdom and in due time Nasrudin was nominated as a qazi.
Shortly afterwards the committee members met Nasrudin again and noticed that the net was gone.
“Where is your net, Nasrudin?” they asked.
“Well, you don’t need the net after the fish is caught!” replied the wily old Mullah.
